When handling metals from the platinum family, our focus is primarily on ruthenium. This is a not well-known but extremely important element, especially in this period that is increasingly driving us towards electric cars and new generation batteries. Cabro’s plant is one of the few in Italy, that handles the treatment and processing of ruthenium salts.
Ruthenium is used in several industries, mainly in the electrical industry, in catalysis, electrochemistry and electroplating. Ruthenium compounds are used to color glass and ceramics. Because of similar properties and a lower cost as compared to rhodium, it is more widely used in electronics. Small additions of ruthenium increase the corrosion resistance, strength and hardness of platinum and palladium alloys.
Ruthenium is used to synthesize hydrogen cyanide from ammonia and methane. Applied in the form of a thin layer on various materials, ruthenium coatings significantly increase their service life.
