A range of heterogeneous CARE catalysts based on platinum group metals (PGM) such as platinum, palladium, rhodium and ruthenium can be used in several chemical reactions involving organic compounds in pharmaceutical, food (oils and lipids), fine chemical and fragrances (perfumes). The key characteristic of CARE catalysts is their activity under very mild process conditions, allowing for convenient use at room temperature and reactions at near-atmospheric pressure.
PGM-based catalysts could be classified according to their ability to break covalent bonds, for instance in forming diatomic molecules of oxygen and hydrogen. The ability to break bonds is determined by the type of metal contained in the product.
